Starting A Podcast While Working From Home With Kids

My quick setup

Today was the first interview for my upcoming Babies, Business + Breakfast™ Podcast: Where Parenthood Meets Professional Development.

This video is a quick tour of my very budget home podcasting setup while I also juggle caregiving duties for two preschoolers and a recap of my first interview!

I had a great chat today with Frankie Tortora – she’s a mum of two kids, freelance graphic designer: francescatortoradesign and founder of Doing It For The Kids, a WONDERFUL community for freelance parents trying to make flexible working work.

She also co-hosts the DIFTK Podcast with Steve Folland of Being Freelance, which won Bronze Best Business Podcast at the British Podcast Awards in 2020.

Babies Business Breakfast Podcast Interview with Frankie Tortora of Doing It For The Kids

My second-worst fear was realized during the start of our call: TECH FAIL.

The primary fear was both my kids screaming in the background the entire time, which they’ve started doing in competition with each other any time I want to talk about anything other than outer space, Peppa Pig or construction sites.

Luckily, one napped while the other played outside with his Dad. I can’t guarantee future interviews will go as smoothly but at least I’m starting off with one strong audio episode.

We had a recording back-up plan, Frankie is a podcast pro and we simply logged off and tried again, during which she helped me out while also negotiating with her 2 and 5-year-old.

Despite it being the weekend and 7 p.m. in England, she was still happy to discuss all things parenthood, business, work and life during the pandemic. Thanks for the chat Frankie!

If you’re looking for tips on freelance life with kids in the mix, check out the Doing It For The Kids Podcast (use search in your favourite app/streaming service, it’s all over the place): http://www.doingitforthekids.net/diftk-podcast/.

There’s almost 50 episodes for you to binge listen to, all Q&A style involving the DIFTK community, running for under 20 minutes each and it’s like chatting with two good work mates who also happen to be parents who just…get it.

Steve’s been recording some episodes from his parked car for sound quality during the pandemic, Frankie records and edits from her kitchen table and home office.

If they can do it, you can too! 🎢

Podcasting With Kids, During A Pandemic

I’m starting a podcast.

While parenting during a pandemic. And attempting to homeschool with a 4 and 2-year-old.

Like everything in my life so far, it will be a lot of learning on the fly, going with the flow and dealing with new challenges as they arise. Hopefully I can edit out some things, if not, you’ll be hearing a lot of REAL LIFE in the background.

Podcasting With Kids | Notes From Another Land | Amy Maureen Lynch

Welcome to my studio.

It’s our home office beside the dining room and unlike our stairs, it doesn’t have a baby gate. The doors are held by tension and don’t lock. While beautiful to work from, it’s not very practical for parents with young kids who feel the urge to give me a squeeze when I’m supposed to be ‘off duty’.

As such, I may also be recording episodes from our bedroom closet, where I can lock a door and use our carpet and clothes for better sound quality. 🤷‍♀️

Where parenthood meets professional development.

I’ll be sharing mini episodes for people who are also parents and don’t have the time/desire/energy/bandwidth/ability to tune in to something actively or in the background for more than 20 minutes. Like my Babies, Business + Breakfast™newsletter and events, it will be an online space where parenthood meets professional development and is designed with your needs and interests in mind, not as an afterthought!

I’ll be recording a mixture of solo episodes and chatting with other parents about business, entrepreneurship, flexible and remote work with kids. Depending on the guest, I’ll be covering creativity, community and creating the changes you wish to see in the world.

Stories to guide you.

My first few guests are from England, Ireland and Canada and I’m hoping to speak with others around the world to share different perspectives when it comes to mixing babies and business.

I’m aiming for How I Built This with Guy Raz meets Hurrah For Gin but I don’t have a production budget and my kids don’t care about what I’m doing. They just want to keep recording their own sound tests and messing around with Audacity’s editing tools.

At the very least they’ll enter elementary school with basic broadcast journalism skills and I’ll be able to practice my radio voice more often.

First interview is this weekend, stay tuned for details when it’s live and then it’s all systems goooo!

Join our movement. Bring your kids.

Have Baby, Will Travel, Speak In Public, Write Books And Run Businesses

Have Baby Will Travel Write Startup Speak In Public | Notes From Another Land | Amy Maureen Lynch

What do these things all have in common?

  • Libraries, Bookshops, Art Galleries, Museums, Cafés and Pubs in Canada, Ireland and England
  • Tech and social impact startup programs and networking events in Canada and England
  • Negotiating flexible work contracts in Canada, asking questions and sitting on a panel during CreativeMornings Ottawa
  • Riding in an airplane, sitting on the tube, overground trains or London city buses

I had my boobs out at all of them and breastfed my kids before/after and often DURING the above experiences.

Yes you can:

  • Search for books, view art, visit exhibitions, order a coffee and socialize at the same time
  • Listen to guest speakers, pitch to strangers and workshop your ideas at the same time
  • Conduct a business meeting, speak in public and stand in front of a crowd at the same time
  • Get where you need to go on public transit and feed your kid, at the same time

If you’re open to being flexible, feeling a bit uncomfortable, sitting (or standing) in the same position for extended periods of time and adapting as you go, I say it’s well worth a try.

When I became a parent, I still liked reading, art, travel, coffee, pints, business, creativity and exploring my neighbourhood.

Doing all of the above has definitely moved me out of my comfort zone and required a bit of trial and error, as well as lots of ups and downs but I now know that I can do it and it’s not up to me if others are uncomfortable.

Because of it all, my kids and I have seen places, art, spaces and had experiences I don’t think I’ll ever tire of reminiscing about.

TLDR: Have baby, will travel/speak in public/write books/run businesses.

Mantras For Uncertain Times

Mantras for uncertain times (and always because life is never certain).

These have served me well over the years, before parenthood and since having kids.

Read them aloud, write them out, read them daily, recite them while recording and listen back. Choose your preference. It’s ok if you don’t believe it at first.

You may cry. Get frustrated. Laugh. Question the truth in these statements.

But over time, through repetition and practice, these thoughts will become things. They will exist in your life. You will be creating your own reality. And you will see, feel and experience the impact.

Try it out and let me know how you go. Please share with others who may need to believe in their own power again (or for the first time in their lives).

Sending you good thoughts, always. 💜

———–

Affirmations to repeat:

  • My family loves me the way I am
  • The less I do, the more I receive
  • Everything is unfolding for me
  • No is a complete answer
  • My worth is not my work
  • Showing up is enough
  • I’m a creative force
  • Life loves me
  • All is well

Remembering A Pivotal Summer Four Years Ago

A bit of background to how Babies, Business + Breakfast™ began

Hi, my name is Amy and I’ve been hiding from the internet since early July 2020 (read my previous few posts for more info).

Time to reintroduce myself for new scrollers and old faithfuls (in case you missed me)! 👀

Amy Maureen Lynch walking with her newborn in Queen's Park, London, England before beginning a Campus for Mums startup program with Google for Startups.
Photo of Amy Maureen Lynch (me) walking with her newborn in Queen’s Park in London, England before beginning a Campus for Mums program with Google for Startups.

This photo is from July 2016 when we had our first son in England.

It’s two weeks after an emergency c-section birth and I’m slooooowly and painfully walking (if you can call it that) around Queen’s Park in London. In my comfy trousers–pants are undies there–which are also my PJs at times.

My Mom snapped it after arriving from Canada to meet her first grandkid and help me leave our flat more often as my husband had to return to work. I can hardly wash a teacup without crying–this really happened–and I’m not supposed to carry anything heavier than my baby…he was 99th percentile, so I had to level up quick!

Despite all of this, I figured out how to get him in an extra long baby wrap based on a YouTube video, left the house before 10 a.m. with a bundle of babe on the outside of my belly (so bizarre) and waddled down to meet Grandma at the Thameslink after her long flight. I am winning at life. 🏆

Things were going so well. Why not join a 10-week startup program in one of the busiest areas of the city with my newborn while I was at it? So I did. Sporting those very same trousers, baby wrap, my little dude and a laptop at times.

Four years and another kid later, I haven’t stopped bringing my WHOLE self into business settings (children included).

The End.

———

Ok – not really.

BUT this is the beginning of the story about how I started Babies, Business + Breakfast™, a growing community of parents who want to invest in themselves alongside their loved ones.

They attend our events, read our newsletters and believe the future of work includes making space for them, alongside their families.

Our programming is designed with yours and your family’s needs at the top of the priority list. Not as an afterthought!

Because you’re not the only one who wants to do what you do, alongside the ones you love.

Celebrate Your Wins: If You Don’t Who Will?

Do you ever take a moment to look back at how far you’ve come?

Photo by my husband from the launch of the Women’s Entrepreneurship Knowledge Hub in Eastern Ontario one evening in June 2019, where I spoke–while babywearing my one-year-old–about creating more parent-friendly corporate spaces and experiences.

Celebrate your wins: If you don’t, who will?

I always forget to but when I feel out of sorts, things aren’t working or I’m getting overwhelmed, instead of trying to push through the never-ending to-do list (often created by myself), I am a big fan of the ‘ta-da!’ list.

Listing out things you’ve already done.

“Wow, thanks Amy. So enlightening.”

But hear me out.

Looking back over the past month may not wow you, but try looking back at the past year, the past five, the past 10.

  • What have you done during those periods of time that you’re proud of?
  • What was the hardest thing you encountered?
  • What did you think was going to be hard but in reality, was a lot easier in retrospect?
  • What moments excited you?
  • And what, as an 80-year-old*, will you be glad you tried? Even if you failed.

These are some ‘ta-da!’ list writing prompts which are great to work through in your own time. But they can also be applied to the present moment, your future goals (and the inevitable challenges).

At the very least, I hope writing out or mentally running through your answers as you read them will make you crack a smile.

I always try to transmute my fears into excitement, anticipation and at the very least, a bit of an experiment.

Because if you never try, you never know. And I’d rather be momentarily uncomfortable than left wondering for a lifetime!

A great personal example from the past year of doing something–which used to scare me and now excites me–to spread a message, after seeing how speaking up can create small (and large) changes in the community.

If you’d like more examples of how I’ve done things which scared the shite out of me (momentarily) and what happened when I did them, check out the January 2020 post ‘A Decade In Review’ on my blog here: https://notesfromanotherland.com/2020/01/02/a-decade-in-review/

My Biggest Secret To ‘Remote Work Success’

I signed up to my fourth remote work gig this week since 2014.

Remote working from a café in Co. Kildare, Ireland

I’ve done remote work–before becoming a parent and since having our two kids–logging on from cafés, pubs, hotels, libraries, museums, art galleries, airports, coworking spaces, conferences, hospitals, apartments and home offices.

While balancing major life moments like pregnancy and childbirth, miscarriage, the illness and deaths of loved ones, the celebrations and marriages of loved ones and moving countries three times (once with a baby!) for a mixture of companies, over the past six years.

Some things they all have in common (besides me)?

  • They approached me
  • I pitched them
  • We negotiated the arrangement
  • I defined what I would be delivering
  • We communicated regularly
  • I delivered what I said I would
  • They paid me for my time
  • I got to do flexible work
  • They got what they asked for
  • Everybody wins

It’s worth noting I’ve provided marketing communications and project management services for all four arrangements–as opposed to producing a product based offering–but all of the companies have been in completely different industries, one was in a different hemisphere to me and I worked with both B2B and B2C.

All of the companies had physical premises but we created a remote work arrangement, I learned on the fly and grew with the businesses as their priorities evolved.

I’m still learning and growing but I feel there are a few things I can share with you to make your transition to remote work (and life) easier, whether it’s a current temporary set up or future long-term goal for yourself.

Becoming a parent in London, England

My biggest secret to ‘remote work success’?

Create meaningful relationships, build trust and deliver results on time (and ideally above your employer/client’s expectations). Rinse and repeat.

Sounds simple but there are many layers beneath those points (like looking after yourself, managing your time, getting the right tools, effective communication, I could go on…) and it’s much more difficult to execute on all of those consistently, over a long period of time.

Which is why, like entrepreneurship, I believe remote work IS POSSIBLE for everyone but it is NOT EASY.

Otherwise, everyone would have been doing it already, no problems and crushing goals online.

What works for me, may not always work for you but I can share a bit about what I do.

You can take from it what you will, test it out and see how it impacts your life and your results.

About the book

I’ve been blogging for over 10 years and this book has been written to help you solve real problems, for real people and focuses on:

  • designing a blog around your values, interests and time commitments;
  • creating content, sharing your ideas and seeking feedback; and
  • defining what you offer, your ideal customer and launching your Minimum Viable Product (MVP).

It aims to help current and aspiring creatives, freelancers, bloggers, flexible workers, business owners and side hustlers with limited time.

This book is not designed for people who have an existing business and want to create a blog as a menu item on their website to drive traffic, otherwise known as content marketing.

You’re going to be learning about how I’ve done the reverse–starting a blog, maintaining it through multiple iterations and big life changes (like moving countries four times and having two kids).

Over time, I’ve used it to test business ideas based on my original content and conversations with people around the world.

What started as an online expat travel diary and a means for me to remain connected with family and friends abroad, turned into:

  • media requests;
  • guest speaking opportunities;
  • connecting with strangers;
  • advocating for issues she’s passionate about;
  • validating business ideas;
  • creating a growing community; and
  • making a positive impact.

This is the magic of getting your ideas out of your head and into the world!

By the end of this book, you’ll have a clear idea of:

  • what themes your blog will focus on;
  • how and when you’ll create original content;
  • who your ideal customer is and how you’ll reach them; and
  • what solution you’ll offer, launch and test.

Startup Blogging: Validate A Business Idea and Build Your Audience contains links to resources and templates to help you work through the exercises and action items mentioned in the book.

The Kindle Edition is normally $5.99 USD:

  • From July 16–20, 2020 it will be available for $0.99 USD or £0.99
  • From July 20–23, 2020 it will be available for $2.99 USD or £1.99

Before returning to the regular price. The Kindle Edition is also available for free to download for members of the Kindle Unlimited program.

*Amazon marketplace prices vary by your purchase location.

Extra support for readers:

If you’re interested in learning more about my book, you can click on the button above and use Amazon’s ‘Look Inside’ feature to view the Table of Contents and read the Introduction.

  • Chapter 1: Your Why – Exercise and Action Step
  • Chapter 2: Your Values – Exercise and Action Step
  • Chapter 3: Your Time – Productivity Resources, Ideal Week Template and Action Step

Feedback on Startup Blogging:

Part of the contents of this book were originally created and delivered by me as a conference workshop for an event in 2019.

The content has been carefully edited to focus on making it more digestible and actionable, encouraging you to startup blogging now and test your ideas over the coming months.

“I liked that the focus was on organic development of community and ideas instead of just social media marketing. I also like the periodic questions to consider what I wanted to do with the information.”

“Enjoyed the ideas for how to share your message or find out what resonates with people.”

“I love Amy’s generosity with sharing her knowledge and experience. Really great session.”

“Lots of useful ideas for starting and growing an audience.”

“(I enjoyed) the personal experiences of the presenter, interaction with audience, resource materials and focus on doing things for passion rather than just for money.”

“The topic is very interesting and well presented.”

“Very inspiring.”

The Patriarchy Isn’t Going To Smash Itself

We Have To Do The Work

Amy Maureen Lynch babywearing her son while presenting at the launch of the Women's Entrepreneurship Knowledge Hub in June 2019 at Impact Hub Ottawa.
Amy Lynch presenting while babywearing her son at the launch of Canada’s Women’s Entrepreneurship Knowledge Hub (WEKH) in Ottawa in June 2019.

Read the transcript of my talk for the WEKH launch or listen to audio here.

In April, I had a casual chat over email with a new contact about smashing the patriarchy.

Please meet Margo Aaron of ‘That Seems Important‘.

If you haven’t already heard of her, subscribed to her straight talking newsletters, read her blog or watched your YouTube channel critiquing websites, please go do that soon (after you read the rest of this post ideally).

She had sent a newsletter about the pandemic covering the new ‘future of work’ in which she wrote:

There is a difference between “not working hard enough” and legitimately impossible circumstances and we’ve blurred that line so hard we can’t tell the difference.

And did her words ever ring true for me.

I replied about how I’ve been bringing my kids into business settings since 2016 and this is what I wrote:

I’ve been writing about remote work for six years and flexible work since becoming a parent four years ago…including my experiences bringing my children into business settings, on my blog: https://notesfromanotherland.com/

As a result, I started hosting parent-friendly professional development events, to make sterile, corporate tech spaces more human for people and their families.

When I explain the concept to understanding strangers, I refer to it as fucking the patriarchy from the inside but instead of a Trojan horse, we arrive with a baby in a stroller, carrier or car seat.

People started to sit up and listen a bit before but now others are living it and I can feel the change already.

Sending parenthood solidarity to you, off to go feed my minions before my next writing shift can be attempted!

We traded a few back and forth words of encouragement. I recommended she check out Hurrah For Gin‘s brilliant writing, artwork and social commentary, she sent me info about similarly themed artwork I must buy.

Then we got back to our respective writing work–dismantling the system that binds us all to an unrealistic expectation of maintained work productivity outputs, alongside outdated parenting responsibilities and the unpaid mental, emotional and physical labour of full-time childcare–while navigating a global health crisis coinciding with economic decline.

All in a day’s (unpaid) work.

Yes dearest reader, if you’re with me on this website, you are in some small way also working with us to smash the patriarchy from the inside.

Because it won’t smash itself and if we wait for that to happen we will be waiting a loooooooooooong ass time.
