The new podcast is live and Season 1 is here!

Mixing Babies And Business Podcast: Where parenthood meets professional development

Lots of weekend dates with my mic and editing software these days…🎙🖥

All of my podcast interviews usually follow the same trend:

  1. Excitement at guests booking in and agreeing to be recorded
  2. Feeling out of my comfort zone as I deal with tech glitches
  3. It then feeling all worth it, as I let everything they said to me sink in
  4. Relearning how to edit audio clips and produce episodes during my kids nap/bedtimes
  5. Getting emotional as I listen back to their stories and insights
  6. Figuring out how to upload and promote episodes
  7. Gratitude for how humble, helpful and responsive every guest has been

What started as an idea turned into self-doubt and problem solving, before quickly evolving into admiration and then enthusiasm to share these stories with other people.

I sincerely hope those who tune in will find comfort in hearing the lived experience of other entrepreneurial and community leaders, in their own words, who have been adapting to their parenthood journey along the way.

You can search for the ‘Mixing Babies And Business’ Podcast on most podcast apps or platforms.

Special thanks to my Season 1 Frankie Tortora, Tanya Hayles, Kevin Bourne and Karla Briones. 🎉🎉🎉

Art x Advocacy: Decorate Your Home While Supporting Women And Children In Transition

I’ve spent the past month working on a creative passion project.

I’ve been sharing my writing over the past decade on this blog and over the summer, I started exploring the process of doing fine art prints of my travel photos.

I’ll be releasing prints over the coming year, with the first editions launching in Fall 2020.

The London Collection features original photography of popular city sights, cheerful doorways and rainbow rows of terraced homes taken during our time living in North West London, England, where we had our first son.

London Collection Fine Art Travel Prints: Notes From Another Land

Explore a different perspective from a familiar place we’ve both been (or one that’s on your bucket list to visit someday!), while giving back.

Add a burst of colour and raise the vibration in your home, while contributing to providing a safe space for women and children in need. With every order, a portion goes toward supporting organizations with a mission to provide housing and support to those in transition.

Each travel print is custom made locally in Ottawa (our current home), using archival quality matte cotton paper, is signed by the artist and includes a handwritten note about the location, before it’s posted to your door.

London Collection Fine Art Travel Prints: Notes From Another Land

I’m offering standard and flat rate shipping for Canada, U.S. and International orders.

I also offer digital gift cards and sincerely appreciate any sharing within your networks you can do!

Stay well everyone,

Not Doing It All, Deciding What To Pursue And When

Working from home with kids during a pandemic and attempting to home school online.

Someone recently posted a question in a freelance group for parents I’m a member of. They were wondering how we get work done, clean/sort the socks, mind the kids and look after ourselves…during the pandemic.

It really stirred up some things for me.

Maybe because I’m so against trying to figure it all out.

Or because I feel angst and rage bubbling below the surface every time I see another headline about the number of caregivers (primarily women), who are thinking of opting out of the workforce because they can’t ‘keep up’ to both their work and family responsibilities as the lockdown restrictions continue and people’s work and home lives become more enmeshed.

I’m sharing my written response, in case it will help someone else feel a little less alone right now.

This is what I wrote:

I feel you on this one.

Current house status: Three piles of clean laundry (and growing) to be sorted, toys strewn everywhere, work to-do list ready but parked right now as I’ve been sick over the weekend.

But I did my bookkeeping, applied for a grant, did virtual meetings and completed a remote work engagement, in between watching our two kids (2 and 4) on weekdays with virtual school for the oldest.

I have done a LOT of mindset work and it always continues as a practice for me, around managing my own expectations of myself as a parent and self-employed person. Because when it comes down to it, not a lot of people are actually coming to my house right now (the Gov in Canada is cracking down with fines!), so we don’t really have an incentive to run around cleaning up after everyone because we’re the ones living in it and if we’re ok with the mess, that’s all that matters.

Think of your inner critic, the words you tell yourself, the feelings you internalize. Are the expectations you’re placing on yourself kind, forgiving and realistic? If not, it may be something to think about and work towards as I’ve found how I speak to myself really does make a difference and you can teach others how you want to be treated.

On a practical note, I use time blocking, batching tasks, whiteboard wall calendars, written lists, calendar reminders and we just ignore piles of dirty dishes and clean laundry and get to them when it’s ‘their time’, which means we’re batching those tasks too. And I have some pretty firm boundaries around my time, needs and how accessible I am to other people right now.

I have a free digital time blocking template (Google Sheets) I created for this, I’ve been using time blocking over the past decade before and after kids. Keeps me sane, helps me batch tasks and compartmentalize my days/weeks.

Send me a message if you’d like the link and I wish you all the best with the socks…I have a growing pile of them still looking for their missing partner!

Sending you and your family good wishes, do your best, it’s hard with a toddler and I don’t think I’ve been on top of anything since becoming a parent but sleep is a priority for me right now, so the messes can wait. xx

The. Messes. Can. Wait.

Unless tidying brings you joy (Marie Kondo fans that’s for you), then by all means declutter and decide how you spend your time accordingly.

Please feel free to comment below with what’s working for you (or NOT working for you) at the moment.

The free time blocking Google Sheet template I mentioned is linked below if you’d like to try it out.

I also made a quick video about the different ways (digital and hard copy) that I try to manage my time…because I’m that passionate about spreading the word to you and others. 🙈

Give yourself a couple of weeks to see if it helps clear the mental fog, structure your days and knock some tasks off your list.

If you’re like me, at the very least you can tell yourself you tried because you downloaded something in an attempt to experiment with a new routine, even if it doesn’t get implemented every day or you half arse it most of the time.

Do what works best for you and your family right now.

Big (virtual) hugs all around.

Stay well everyone,

– Amy (+ Family) xx

Making Space For New Creations

We’ve lived in Australia, Ireland, England and Canada over the past decade and I feel like pieces of my heart are scattered around the world.

Over the summer, I decided to start going through my travel photos taken over the years and explore the process of making them into fine art prints.

I plan to print them locally here in Ottawa, Canada (our current home) to send out to others who are seeking to add a bit of colour–and perhaps adventure–to their home and/or work space walls.

A portion of sales will go to organizations which help others settle and find a home, when they are without one.

Creating From A Place Of Gratitude

This new project is focused on getting back in touch with my creative joy, to share a different perspective with you from a familiar place we’ve both been (or one that’s on your bucket list to visit someday!), while giving others access to opportunities in places where they may not have a support network or a physical home to return to.

We have been fortunate and privileged in that every time we moved countries, we’ve been able to access visas or work permits to grant us permission to search for work or study and remain in the country, which then enabled us to rent a place to live, demonstrate to the banks our personal character and start to put down roots in places where we didn’t have strong connections.

Not everyone we met had the same experiences as us and we are always looking to pay it forward wherever we are. We’ve typically done it through sharing resources, work references, giving positive reviews, volunteering and now this is another way for me to connect those dots.

Explore More With Notes From Another Land

You can follow my new account @notesfromanotherland on Instagram and visit the online shop section of my website for more details when the prints are ready to be released. I also plan to share all things art, design, creativity, travel (my happy place!) and expat related there.

My flexible work and entrepreneurship content can now be found on my new Babies, Business + Breakfast™ website, social media accounts and newsletter, as it’s grown from the seed of an idea into activism, events, community and its’ own brand.

I’m in the process of editing and adjusting my content and brand, as I focus on building the online shop and print studio over the coming months but will use this blog and my newsletter to keep you posted.

If you’re interested in receiving updates about the prints, you can also sign up here.

Thanks for reading and exploring with me!

Making Things And Breaking Things

Back From Summer Break

Amy Maureen Lynch Notes From Another Land Blog

So much for our adults only retreat room and kid free sofa. 🤷‍♀️

How are YOU doing?

Someone contacted me recently on LinkedIn and asked, “What’s your number one business goal over the coming six months?”

I replied, “To not burn out.”

In between remote work, looking after kids and creating things, it really is my main focus as the pandemic unfolds. Because if I burn out, all of the above will not be tended to.

Since March, I’ve been saying, “This is a marathon not a sprint.”

It’s a mantra I adopted when moving countries and starting from scratch in a new place.

I continued to use it as I validated business ideas and pitched to stranger after stranger.

It served me well when I became a new parent and I found myself coming back to it when the days felt long, hard or I didn’t know if I could function on the minimal sleep I was getting.

As I wrote my first book and was uncertain of how the final draft would take shape, I repeated that reminder.

In reality, it’s often also accompanied by the following regular actions for me:

  • Adjusting my expectations based on the evolving situation I’m faced with
  • Focusing on ONE thing I want to accomplish each day
  • Writing it down before and on the date I actually complete it
  • Forgiving myself if I don’t get it done the first time around
  • Taking time to rest throughout each day and trying* to sleep well at night
  • Finding fun in everyday moments and adventures (can be as small as using a different colour pen or listening to music as I work)
  • Celebrating what has happened over a longer period of time in retrospect (at the end of a week or month, year and decade)

*Major disclaimer: Sleep depends on my day and the kids sleep patterns

Be gentle with yourself these days. 💜

Amy Maureen Lynch Notes From Another Land Podcasting With Kids

I’ve been making a solid effort to film more video about my experiences podcasting from home around my current work from home/looking after kids varied schedule.

Nothing is perfect and it’s often done during naptime or while the kids are distracted.

I’ve been sharing an interview recap after I chat with each guest and posting it on my Instagram TV Channel and adding flexible work content on YouTube.

I’m updating other resources as I can, stay tuned for more!

Switching Up The House As We Work From Home

Remote Learning And Work

Farm School 101

Farm school 101: Calf hutches can and should be repurposed into playhouses/classrooms whenever possible.

Teachers can instruct you from tree swings. Raking apples is part of cardio break. Always drop everything and watch when a truck hauling a flatbed trailer passes.

Gotta have some green to break up all the screen time. 🌻

Redesigning our living space

Spent the weekend outside doing a windy walk at the arboretum, bike rides at the family farm and watching Selling Houses Australia. It’s been a guilty pleasure since 2011 when we lived in Brisbane and we’ve been following Andrew, Shaynna and Charlie ever since. The kids are even getting into it, most episodes feature demolition. 🏗

We rearranged our house a bit to switch up the meals and play areas and also need to think about upgrading our beds as the youngest may be ready to leave his crib soon. 😪 But for now it feels like a nice change as the temperatures are dropping.

We wrappped it up with my fourth-or maybe fifth-edition of LTC Lockdown Tub Cuts where each boy in the house sits down and I practice my 3 and 7-blade barber skills. ✂️

We switched our play area on the weekend, it’s been here a few times but never used as much as now. With a 2 and 4 year old it’s occupied for longer and the low windows are perfect for car, dog and people watching. 🚚

Remote working while remote schooling and looking after kids during the pandemic.

This is the view from our home office, we’re trying to keep it adults only but of course the kids are always busting through the tension doors and running in there. Will do a close up of the glass smudges in my stories…what looked like cute french doors are now eternally dirty tiny windows. I think toddler fingerprints and lip marks are cute until the boogers come out, then it’s game over. 🙅‍♀️

We’ll be moving things around as it gets colder and they get bored. They’re outgrowing the kids table so we use the kitchen table for colouring and other messier activities now but I am a lazy homeschool parent so we’re light on that. Come winter I’ll need to get more creative. For now, it’s outdoor time as much as possible. 🌱

The great thing about little people is their enthusiasm for life and anything small we do to change up their play or bedrooms gets squeals of delight. We have not bought any new toys in months and don’t plan to until Christmas. But ask them for help, move a bookshelf, switch up the books and what toys we do have and I feel like Mary Poppins over here. 🌂💼

Have you been switching up your living space lately?

DIY Podcasting While Parenting Including Tech Glitches

Trying something new involving technology?

I’ve found something will always test you!

Recap of the third interview for my upcoming Babies, Business + Breakfast™ Podcast: Where Parenthood Meets Professional Development.

A relaxed photo of me in my home office/podcasting studio before the third interview for my upcoming Mixing Babies And Business™ Podcast: Where Parenthood Meets Professional Development.

I encountered a recording file upload problem after my interview with Karla Briones. Karla runs multiple businesses, has two kids, is an advisor to entrepreneurs and took the time to speak with me after the Labour Day long weekend here in Canada.

Our conversation was candid, she shared her experiences from becoming a parent, starting her businesses, taking time off due to exhaustion, showing all sides of her business journey on social media and how she’s navigating the current reality of remote work during the pandemic.

We logged off shortly after 1 p.m. and then UH-OH, my audio track worked but I couldn’t get hers to upload on my end. After some trial and error, it eventually uploaded, the sound quality is perfect and all is well.

So now after a slight panic, feelings of failure and regret for not recording a local back up with each guest (watch the video for more on that), I’m excited to share Karla’s interview with you and will be editing our chat into a series of episodes like I’m doing with my first two guests.

I swear every time I record another one of these my heart expands and contracts (like the Grinch?) as I listen to very personal anecdotes, passions and reasons for being and creating what they’ve created so far in life, from each guest.

I then can’t wait to share it with you, so you can also experience those same feelings of… “I’m not the only one. I’m not alone. Others have done this. So can I.”

I can’t explain it better than that right now. But aside from learning how to work through tech glitches, adjusting my podcast interview process for future guests, getting into the editing groove and planning these calls around my kids ‘quiet time’, I AM LEARNING SO MUCH. From each conversation. And feeling a lot of emotions.

I’m so grateful for everyone who’s taken the time to speak with me and who’s open to a future interview…even though we have to remain apart. Ok gotta go get a tissue and start editing. 😭

Podcasting (And Picking Show Music) With Kids

Let the editing begin!

Recap of the second interview for my upcoming Babies, Business + Breakfast™ Podcast: Where Parenthood Meets Professional Development.

I finished another interview, with parent and founder, Tanya Hayles, of RSVP and Co, Black Moms Connection and Colour In White Spaces. She’s an award-winning event planner, writer, speaker and consultant by day and runs a global online village of over 16,000 members by night.

2020 has been a rollercoaster year and Tanya shared how she’s been transforming the way she works, while remaining true to her future vision and the legacy she wants to create.

Looking forward to sharing our conversation with you this Fall, there’s powerful stuff that happens when parents are open about their experiences and resources are shared.

Watch my video recap on IGTV:

I’m discovering in order to keep these interviews as mini episodes, I’ll need to edit and release them as a series, but it’s nothing I can’t figure out in Audacity. For those who scroll the podcast reel and refuse to commit to a 45-60 minute session, I’m working on a solution.

The whole family is on board

I’ve been getting my kids to help me pick my podcast music…the youngest hits the space bar when he wants to move to the next option, the oldest gives me feedback through dance. 🎶

I hadn’t brushed my hair yet in this photo and he’s still in his PJs but I did get a morning shower and recorded my podcast trailer while the boys ran errands with their Dad and brought me home a flat white from a local coffee shop.

It’s all about time blocking around here and finding the joy in everyday, small moments, to keep things going as smoothly as possible in our house.
